Use Putty as terminal for Cygwin (vs cmd)

I use Cygwin when I need to use linux tools not available in Windows. The generic windows command line terminal cmd.exe is pretty lame. I use Putty all the time as a remote terminal for our Linux and Solaris machines, it’s wonderful. Here’s how to use Putty for Cygwin as well:

  1. Download this special patched version of Putty called Puttycyg and extract it where you’d like to keep it on your harddrive (for me it’s c:\Program files\utils\putty\)
  2. Run putty.exe and select Cygterm under Connection Type:. Type in a - (single dash) for the Command.
  3. Name it and save it under Saved Sessions so you can use it again by hitting load. Also with this you can make a shortcut on your desktop to putty.exe and set the target to -load “what ever you named it”
  4. Hit open.

There ya go home sweet home in putty land.
