Hook up iChat to Use GTalk

We at the office have stopped the yelling (or much of it) and have resorting to tapping keys to communicate with others down the hall and even across the desk if need be. Using an IM client such as GTalk or AIM cuts down the e-mail for simple messaging or to ask a simple 1-2 line question. It’s a great way to communicate without leaving your seat or picking up the phone. For those of us on a mac, we already have a built in client, iChat, which can easily be harnessed to use GTalk. GTalk is a jabber based application which allows it to be used within other apps such as iChat and mobile devices. To learn how to do this, keep reading.
Step 1:
Open up iChat and got to “Preferences”

Step 2:
Click on the “+” tab (1) and select “Jabber Account” (2) from the drop down menu. Fill in all the appropriate information as shown. And click “Add” (3).

Step 3:
Select your GTalk from Account list and click on “Server Setting”. Confirm that your server information is correct, Port is set to 5223 and all the boxes are checked as shown.

Auxiliary Step 4:
To start chatting using Jabber(GTalk) when you start iChat again at a later time, just go to “Window” and select Jabber from your list.

Congrats! You’re ready to chat it up with the world!
